The 4th European Machine Vision Forum took place from September 4 to Friday, September 6, 2019, in Lyon, France.
“Deep learning alone is not enough – overall system optimization is needed.”
This sentence summarizes the conclusion of the Forum, where research and industry met. The focal topic “Photonics and Machine Vision: Going Deep into Integration” suited well into the hosting technology region of Lyon with Grenoble and St. Etienne close by. Starting point for this main topic was a look into nature. Over millions of years, biological vision systems have developed which not only have a high learning ability but also developed very different eyes specifically adapted to the individual tasks in terms of spatial resolution, wavelength sensitivity, color vision, motion sensitivity and reaction time.
The program featured a further 25 presentations and an accompanying exhibition. The participants honored the high quality of the presentations, the professional organization of the event and the numerous opportunities for exchanging ideas between research and industry.
Outlook on the 5th European Machine Vision Forum 2020
At the end of the event, the 5th European Machine Vision Forum was announced by the local Chair, Prof. Peter O’Brien to take place from 10-11 September 2020 at the Tyndall National Institute in Cork, Ireland. The focal topic then – “Accuracy, Reliability and Limits of Machine Vision” will again be an ideal theme for communication between researchers and industry, since research can explore the theoretical limits and the industry can demonstrate the current state of technology.
