UKIVA director gives tutorial at conference in China
Don Braggins, Director of the UK Industrial Vision Association (UKIVA) recently gave a 'publishing tutorial' at a conference in China.
At the Institute of Engineering Technology's (IET) Visual Information Engineering 2008 Conference, which was held in Xi'an on July 29 to August 1, 2008, Braggins gave a tutorial entitled: 'A Short Guide to "Dos and Don'ts" in Order to Ensure Acceptance of Your Paper in Optical Engineering'.
Braggins was appointed as an Associate Editor for the peer-reviewed SPIE publication Optical Engineering in 2005. His responsibilities involve the assignment of reviewers for papers in the field and the decision on whether to accept, decline or request revision of the papers based on the reviews. In the calendar year 2007, 66 papers in the category 'machine vision and pattern recognition' were submitted to the journal, and of these just half were accepted.
In his tutorial, Braggins described how the review process is implemented; what makes a paper likely to be accepted (or rejected); and what steps can be taken to ensure that a minimum of revision is required before acceptance.
The 5th IET Visual Information Engineering 2008 Conference addressed fundamental elements of image, video and graphics research and development. Key technical areas included the growing convergence of computer graphics and computer vision- and image- processing, which is an increasingly important area in commercial multimedia applications development.
The UKIVA has strong links with the IET. Both Braggins and UKIVA Chairman Mark Williamson, are members of the IET's Visual Information Engineering committee.
In other news, the UKIVA will be running a series of seminars at PHOTONEX 08, which is being held at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry, Warwickshire, UK, on October, 15-16, 2008.
The programme of seminars and presentations on 'Aspects of Imaging' will cover new products; application stories; recent advances in technology; what needs to be considered when using a vision system; and high-speed imaging.
