AVT acquires Prosilica, and opens new production facility in Germany
Allied Vision Technologies GmbH (AVT) is acquiring 100% of the shares of Canadian camera manufacturer Prosilica Inc. AVT reports that it has also opened a new production facility in Germany.
AVT says that the acquisition of Prosilica makes it one of the top suppliers of industrial cameras to the world market. Both companies have agreed to keep the purchase price confidential.
The acquisition will enable the companies to create an industry-leading range of Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) and FireWire products, and extend their strong market position in the area of digital cameras for industrial image-processing.
Prosilica, which was founded during 2003, develops, produces and markets industrial cameras based on digital GigE technology, and is one of the acknowledged market leaders in this segment. Through Prosilica, AVT - a wholly-owned subsidiary of the technology enterprise Augusta Technologie AG - gains immediate access to the important GigE, industrial camera market place. Technology teams working at both firms will now further develop both FireWire and GigE interface camera systems, which will be sold under the brand names already established by the two companies. Further growth is expected through intimate collaboration in the areas of development, production and sales.
Commenting on the acquisition, Frank Grube, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of AVT, said: "In Prosilica we have found the perfect complement to Allied Vision Technologies. The high-class cameras from Prosilica represent an excellent strategic extension to our existing product range in the area of machine vision, in which Allied Vision Technologies is already the world leader with its Firewire-based digital cameras. At the same time, this acquisition allows us to offer our customers a broad product portfolio that now also includes GigE cameras - enabling us to further expand our market position in North America, Europe and Asia."
Marty Furse, CEO of Prosilica, added: "We are happy to become part of Allied Vision Technologies. Being part of this larger organisation will accelerate Prosilica's growth and enhance its market presence. Joint product development and sales activities will result in immediate, strong market growth for both brands."
In other news, AVT recently formally opened its new production facility at its headquarters in Stadtroda, Germany. The company began extensive construction work in April 2007 to expand its production and storage capacity. The new production facility came on-line at the beginning of 2008, and the second phase of construction, to add new office space, has just been completed.
Over 1000 m2 of space was added to the plant to expand its capacity for camera production, quality assurance and inventory. The company also modernised its production process and logistics, creating an all-new, fully automated, assembly system for printed circuit boards and two new automated, high-rise storerooms to streamline logistics for components, modules and finished cameras. The company also expanded its human resources and know-how at the Stadtroda site by hiring five new employees in its manufacturing, purchasing and quality assurance divisions.
Investing in new production capacity had become necessary because of AVT's rapid growth in the industrial and scientific image-processing markets worldwide. The company's 2007 sales rose more than 13% to over 24 million euros, and it appointed its 100th employee during March 2008.
"With our new production facility, we are now best equipped for our further expansion. We want to keep growing by opening up new markets and expanding our product portfolio," commented Grube.
At its US affiliate, AVT Inc, the company wants to grow business further, while in Asia it is interested in establishing a subsidiary. Besides traditional industrial automation, the firm is also planning to pursue new fields, such medical technology, traffic, safety, and even sports and entertainment which, it says, offer a high potential for growth.
