The task An automobile manufacturer processes forged piston rods. By using a machine vision solution, all plane faces and running surfaces as well as the cracked areas can be inspected. Benefit The special lens achieves the highest inspection level, independently of the size of the connecting rods With the VINSPEC machine vision system, which is integrated into a Marposs piston rods measurement machine, VITRONIC has just the custom-tailored solution for the following: On the external plane faces, VINSPEC inspects the surfaces for cavities and the bevels for dimensional accuracy. Additionally, it performs inspections for general processing errors. The presence of visible crack lines is an indication for an incorrectly fitted piston rod, the reason why the inspection has to be performed. VINSPEC detects the visible crack lines on the homogeneous surface of the piston rod (see photo). VINSPEC reliably inspects the running surfaces through a rotating special lens with only one camera per connecting rod. This special lens, belonging to a patent-pending application, makes it possible to find the smallest defects even with large rod eye diameters. Another advantage for the user: with the exception of the special lens, neither the camera nor the piston rod must be moved. The wear-free VINSPEC inspection system is free of movable cables and in this way it ensures longer lifetime with highly reliable inspection technology. Implementation The piston rods are conveyed per hub bars through the testing stations. At the first station, VINSPEC inspects the plane faces of the two connecting rods. In order for the bottom side to be inspected a mechanical device turns over the piston. Next, VINSPEC inspects the piston rod sides for visible crack lines. At the final station, the inspection system with the unique rotating lens takes segment-by-segment pictures of the circumference and evaluates them for the presence of certain defects.
