Sealing cap inspection using a sensor
The task
A pharmaceutical company wants to automatically inspect bottle caps on the inlet section of an inspection machine. The caps are of different size and varying appearance. The following things should be inspected:
• Differing cap colors: these display the differing bottle contents.
• Flanging: is tested for quality and for color.
• Sealing plugs: the correct position of the sealing plugs is monitored through
the relative positioning of the flange cap.
Benefit
The company is using only one sensor to complete three inspection tasks. The panorama sensor from VITRONIC is in the position of being able to inspect the upper side, shell and flanging on sealing caps at the same time. All results are presented in only one image: the color of the cap, the quality of the shell and – via reflection – the flanging. If changeover to other bottles / cap sizes is necessary, the sensor simply needs to be adjusted in terms of its height. The space-saving sensor is also ideal for systems which offer limited amounts of space, as well as being suited to the upgrading of pre-existing systems.
Implementation
The panoramic sensor is installed vertically to the bottle and does not require the costly or time consuming handling of the bottles. This minimizes costs and saves on space. In the case at hand, caps with a diameter between 18 and 35 mm are tested. The sensor is able to take depth measurements of up to 30 mm. 120 bottle caps are inspected per minute. The VITRONIC system is optionally offered with a qualification package in accordance with GAMP 4.
