Generating an anthropometric data base

3D measurement with the whole-body scanner The task The average size of the population is changing in the course of time. But this is not the only changing body measurement. For instance, in relation the length of the legs have grown faster than the trunk. TNO in the Netherlands is participant in the CAESAR project (Civilian American and European Surface Anthropometry Resource) for collecting anthropometric data starting in three countries: The USA, Italy, and the Netherlands. This data base intends to help companies to create a better fitting (or adjusted) product for the customers. Benefit A VITUS whole body scanner was used to generate data of the size and shape of the human body in the Netherlands. About 2000 subjects from different regions, sex, age and ethnicity will be measured in the Netherlands in 1999. This data base will not only collect data of standard measurements (height, chest measurement, ...), it will also collect a total three-dimensional data set of the measured persons. Therefore, every user of this data base will be able to get the data and measurements of the population he needs for his development of products. Further application For instance, a designer of glasses will be able to design the glasses according to the shape of the scanned persons. He will be able to check how the glasses would fit all persons in the data base without letting them all try his new design.
