A Short History of GenICam™

June 2003 – Kick-Off meeting for GEV standard in Chicago

An API subcommittee was formed which became the root of the GenICam group.

October 2003 – GEV meeting on Vision Show in Stuttgart

It became clear that an API based on a fixed register set was not flexible enough for the needs of the industry.

May 2004 – GEV meeting on Vision Show East in Boston

The idea of a XML based camera description file was presented and accepted.

June 2004 – GEV API group meeting at JAI in Copenhagen

The key technical concepts of GEV and GenICam were discussed and agreed on.
There was consensus that the ideas of GenICam should also apply to 1394, Camera Link and other interface standards.

July 2004 – GEV Whitepaper

In this paper the GenICam ideas were described in a concise manner.

August 2004 – GEV TL group meeting at Coreco in Montreal

The key technical concepts of GEV and GenICam were discussed and agreed on.

September 2004 – Meeting at Basler in Ahrensburg

Decision on creating a common reference implementation for GenICam.
Agreement on keeping the GenICam work outside the GEV standard.

December 2004 – Meeting at Stemmer in Munich

Heavy work on the technical details of GenICam.

April 2005 – Meeting at Atmel/e2v in Grenoble

Decision to make GenICam a separate standard hosted by the EMVA.
The name GenICam, the logo, the license, and the group rules were defined.

July 2005 – Meeting at MVTec in Munich

Heavy work on the technical details of GenICam.

October 2005 – Meeting at Leutron Vision in Zürich

Heavy work on the technical details of GenICam.

November 2005 – Workshop during Vision Show in Stuttgart

Working prototypes for GEV, 1394 and CL were shown on the fair.
A workshop to present the GenICam ideas to the public was being held by the group members together.
On the GEV standard meeting the members require a list of standard features asap.

December 2005 – Meeting at Basler in Ahrensburg

First discussion on the standard feature list.

February 2006 – Meeting at National Instruments in Austin

First draft of the standard feature list.
Combined test action launched for the reference implementation.

June 2006 – Meeting at DALSA/Coreco in Montreal

Last review of the standard and the reference implementation.
First in-official plug-fest using GEV and GenICam.

September 2006 – GenICam Release Version 1.0

At last! :-)

May 2007 – Meeting at Basler in Ahrensburg

Draft for GenTL (standard text and reference implementation) available.

June 2007 – GenICam Maintenance Release Version 1.0.1

GenApi maintenance version 1.0.1 fixes some small problems.

September 2007 – Meeting at Pleora in Ottawa

Heavy work on the technical details of GenTL.
Agreement on future GenICam marketing approach.
Discussions on the Camera Link support in GenICam.

April 2008 – Meeting at Leutron Vision in Pilsen

The GenTL standard was finalized and made ready for approval process.
Intensive work towards new releases of the GenApi and SFNC modules.
Established subcommittee to define GenICam product certification process.
